Young & Driven                                                                                           June 30, 2012

This last week has been a rollercoaster regarding my job hunt. On Wednesday the first get together took place of an initiative I started with career coach Inti Schutte. A couple of weeks ago I went to an open coffee where I first met her. It was a meeting organized around job-hunting via social media. The stories and conversations did me well, gave me energy and motivated me not to give up but keep on trying. The opportunity to talk about my situation or ask questions made me realize that this is what I missed during my search and thought others might miss that as well. I noticed that I was the youngest person at that meeting and I found that a bit strange since I know that many of my friends are looking for a job! Therefore the idea arose of organizing meetings for high-educated youngsters to exchange experiences, give each other feedback, provide support, motivate and inspire!

Back to Wednesday. It was a small group that was present in Zoetermeer but that didn’t matter to be a success! The ones who joined the meeting were very satisfied with the attention and feedback. They said it was much needed because no one told them ever before. They also think it is important to stay up to date with the latest developments of applying in this difficult labor market. That’s why I created a group on LinkedIn named “Young & Driven. Looking for a job”. Here we can post files, start discussions and keep each other posted on the search for a job.

Friday I joined the jubilee edition of the event ‘Find your job via LinkedIn’ meant for job seekers and initiated by Bas Westland, speaker, trainer and blogger about recruitment, social media and entrepreneurship. Just to be there was such an amazing experience and gift! The atmosphere was great: all the participants were nice and helpful. I had a resume check, learned tips & tricks on how to use LinkedIn in an effective way, talked about my elevator pitch, got styling advice, had speed dates with several recruiters of well known companies, got the chance to connect with interesting people and listened to guest speakers. Especially listening to the speakers was so inspiring. But everything I hear comes back to one thing: listen to your heart and take action! It was a very intensive day, but I have learned a lot and I’m ready to conquer the world.
