Happy birthday, the big Three-O!

Yesterday, the 9th of February, was my 30th B-day! It was a quiet but busy and fun day. My birthday coincided with the Chinese New Year and carnaval this year, that’s why I have decided to celebrate my birthday at a later moment.

Despite all these festivities, I had a great birthday! A friend came over the evening before and stayed the night. I love that because it’s nicer to have some company when the clock strikes 12 at night. The next morning the second friend arrived and after spending some time I went to the center of The Hague to have lunch and celebrate Chinese New Year with my best friend.

Right now it’s wintertime here in the Netherlands. So the weather had a special surprise for my birthday…it began to snow! I really love it. I even had to cycle back to my place in a snow shower! 😀

Another friend came over in the afternoon to stay till the next day. We had dinner, had a lot of catching up to do, watched bloopers of ‘Friends’ so had a good laugh, and went to the movies! Today we walked down the beach, it was such a beautiful sunny day.

It was definitely a great weekend to celebrate my birthday. It marks a new start, a new year and a new decade. I’m determined to make the most of it!

Looking back at 2012

2012 has been one heck of a year. I have experienced so much I don’t even know where to start. I think I can honestly say that it was a year filled with many losses…loved ones, a job, my lovely car, and my own place to live. But I can tell, all these things taught me a lot as well. For example, I have learned to stay true to myself. Life is short, why waste it with things you don’t need or do things you don’t want to.

To stay positive and keep the faith and believe that everything would get better (it couldn’t get any worse 😉 ) I started creating my own initiatives to stay busy and connected to ‘society’. I also decided to spend more time volunteering.

These new activities gave me so much energy! I began blogging and the initiatives Young & Driven and Train Girl brought me so much. I got many new valuable connections on LinkedIn and made new friends. Young & Driven was found by media since unemployment under recent graduates is pretty high and Train Girl is still such a fun project. It was just an experiment and ended up as a nice initiative appreciated by, for me, enough people to carry on with it. I met new people and it opened my eyes. The smallest gesture can make a big difference!

And I don’t know what happened but now, at the end of 2012, everything seems to turn out OK! I have recently found a job and I’m busy moving! 😀 So for me 2012 couldn’t have a better ending!

I wish you all a happy & healthy 2013! May all your wishes come true…

Kick off

One of my friends on facebook posted this quote by Steven Pressfield: “Don’t prepare. Begin. Our enemy is not lack of preparation. The enemy is resistance, our chattering brain producing excuses. Start before you are ready.”

So here I am, not knowing how to start or where to go with this blog. I think it’s the best to see what happens and where life brings me…just go with the flow. The subjects of the pages I created so far were the first things that popped up in my mind. I have been fascinated by it during my life or have a huge passion for it.

This blog, which I decided to call ‘Popcorn,’ is a mix of personal experiences and media & entertainment. ‘Pop’ is part of the word popcorn and stands for several cultural phenomenons. Pop is a term that derives from an abbreviation of ‘popular’. It is often used as a description for pop music but can also refer to pop culture. Popular culture contains qualities of mass appeal.

Popcorn itself is mostly associated with watching movies. It pops, it’s pleasurable company and gone in no time when you eat too fast 😉 I see my blog as a fast moving compilation of fragments of my life and interests.

ENJOY!
